GROWING LODGING DEMAND BRINGS TWO NEW HOTELS TO SPRINGFIELD

SPRINGFIELD, OREGON – A growing demand for lodging in Springfield’s Gateway area has motivated one of Oregon’s most prolific hotel developers to bring in two new hotels within the next two years.

Sycan Development has applied to construct a TownePlace Suites by Marriott at the intersection of Kruse Way and Hutton Street, with plans to open in early 2007. TownePlace will boost the area’s lodging offerings as Springfield’s first extended-stay hotel, catering to travelers spending a week or more in the area. The developer also plans to build a Holiday Inn that would open in late 2007. The Holiday Inn would be Eugene/Springfield’s first full-service hotel since the Eugene Hilton to offer an in-house restaurant, room service, valet, guest laundry services, and upgraded amenities. The Holiday Inn would also provide conference facilities for groups up to one hundred, with a proposed 3,000 square feet of meeting space. Both hotels would be managed by InnSight Hotel Management Group, which operates hotels throughout Oregon, and recently has ventured into Washington.

InnSight Executive VP Pat McShane says the development of these hotels is in response to the new ‘travel-generators’ in the Gateway area. “Symantec is doubling in size, Royal Caribbean Cruises is gearing up, and families will soon be visiting patients in the new Peace Health facility,” says McShane. “All these factors will increase the demand on the Gateway business community for a moderately priced extended-stay hotel, and a hotel with meeting facilities,” he says. “TownePlace Suites and Holiday Inn will be a perfect fit.”

The 200-plus new hotel rooms will increase room tax revenues for the City of Springfield with 90 extended-stay suites at the TownePlace, and 142 rooms at the Holiday Inn. Nearly 100 new job openings will be created by the two new hotels. “I’m pleased Sycan Development will continue to add premium facilities to the Springfield/Eugene market, as it has for more than 20 years,” says Sycan President Richard Boyles. Boyles adds that he is excited about the Holiday Inn development returning a high quality venue for the meeting needs of local groups. “We sized the meeting room component of the Holiday Inn large enough to meet the local need, but kept it small enough to avoid competition with the Springfield Conference Center project.” Sycan and InnSight, along with other Springfield businesses, recently contributed substantial funding to study the potential for a conference center in the Gateway area.
